Ms. Blankenship shares her recipes for making essential oil-based face and body products along with nutritious juices and tonics in this wonderful, easy to enjoy book. She also dives into plant ingredients, beauty regimen ideas, and tips for creating a cleaner self-care routine. “What I seek to share in my products isn’t the promise of the impossible; it’s the intelligence of nature.” Jana’s honesty is inspirational and the thought that has gone into every detail, from the wonderful recipes to the beautiful photographs, makes this book one to make time for. It’s perfect for a rainy afternoon with a cup of hot, herbal tea and a bit of time on your hands.
In the chapter, “Pursuing Wild Beauty”, Ms. Blankenship speaks of being more conscious consumers and the ease with which we can make quality products for ourselves using simple, healthful ingredients. She goes on to help demystify ingredient lists, reminds us to look for products with natural preservatives, shares some of the ingredients she loves, and some ingredients to avoid. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book. It ends with eight lovely recipes for beautiful body care, including one of my favorites, Sea Salt & Sunshine Body Scrub using simple ingredients like sea salt, coconut oil, and essential oils.
The book wraps up with a chapter on self care, gratitude, sleep, herbal allies and medicinal foods, and includes more recipes. She ends with an Afterword quote from Mary Oliver, “Attention is the beginning of devotion.” This summarizes her book perfectly and reminds us that we all are deserving of both our attention and devotion.
This is a lovely book, filled with beautiful ingredients, scents and magical information. Jana Blankenship is the Founder of Captain Blankenship (a small, women-run company in the Hudson River Valley) and is a natural beauty expert. I highly recommend heading over to Moondrop Herbals and purchasing a copy, and, maybe some herbal tea to enjoy while reading.
